History

Nainital’s historical association with the Kumaon region dates back centuries. Following the decline of the Katyuri Dynasty in the 10th century, Kumaon underwent fragmentation into numerous princely states. In the vicinity of Nainital, various branches of a Khasiya family held sway. The Chand dynasty eventually emerged as the dominant ruling power in Kumaon, but this transition spanned several centuries. Interestingly, Nainital and its surrounding areas were among the final territories to be assimilated into the Chand dynasty’s rule, signifying the enduring autonomy and uniqueness of this picturesque region within the broader historical context.
