History

Nawanshahr owes its origins to migrants hailing from Rahon, a town nestled along the Sutlej River’s banks, exposing it to periodic flooding. This settlement was aptly christened as Nawanshahr. Over time, it evolved into the bastion of the Ghorewaha community, closely aligned with Emperor Akbar through familial bonds. The historical significance of Nawanshahr, rooted in its foundation and the enduring ties to the Mughal emperor, adds layers of cultural and historical depth to the town. Despite its vulnerability to natural elements, Nawanshahr has thrived, showcasing resilience and cultural heritage that continue to resonate with its inhabitants today.

Demography

As per the 2001 census data, Nawanshahr boasted a population of 587,468 individuals, with 306,902 males and 280,566 females, resulting in a female-to-male ratio of 913 to 1000. The town exhibited an impressive literacy rate of 75%, outperforming the national average of 59.5%. Male literacy stood at 79%, while female literacy was at 71%. Approximately 11% of the population was under the age of 6. The population density was 439 people per square kilometer, and there was a 10.43% population increase between the 1991 and 2001 censuses. Nawanshahr is a constituency (number 47) in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, currently represented by Angad Saini of the Congress party.
