About North 24 Parganas

North 24 Parganas, sometimes known as North Twenty Four Parganas, is a district in eastern India’s southern West Bengal region. In the tropical zone, North 24 Parganas stretches from longitude 88º20′ east to 89º5′ east and from latitude 22° 11′ 6′′ north to 23° 15′ 2′′ north. North 24 Parganas’ district headquarters are located in Barasat. Since 2014, North 24 Parganas has become the most populated district in West Bengal and, by extension, all of India. By area, it is the State’s tenth-largest district.

History

John Zephaniah Holwell was named zemindar of the District by the Company in 1751. Following the Bengali War of 1756–1757, the Company gave it to Lord Clive in 1759 as a personal Jaghir (zamindari), and following his passing, it was once more directly under the company’s control. Under Lord Cornwallis’s administration in 1793, the whole Sunderbans were a part of Twenty-four Parganas. A few parganas on the Hoogly River’s western banks were added to it in 1802. Previously, these parganas were in Nadia. In Twenty-four Parganas, a separate collectorate was founded in 1814.

Geography

The district is located in the delta of the Ganga-Brahmaputra. The Hooghly River, the main Ganga distributary, runs along the district’s western edge. The Ganga River has numerous additional distributive branches and sub-branch, as do other nearby rivers including the Ichhamati, Jamuna, and Bidyadhari.

Economy

The primary occupations of people include farming, fishing, and other agricultural pursuits. Agricultural landholdings are typically 3.2 Bighas in size. While North 24 Parganas is one of West Bengal’s most economically developed districts, the southern portion of the district suffers from persistent poverty. This district, home to several prominent IT/ITES Indian and international enterprises, is Kolkata’s information technology hub. There are about 1,500 businesses with offices in Sector V.

The district office is located at Barasat. This district contains 1599 villages, 200 gram panchayats, 27 municipalities, 22 development blocks, and 35 police stations. Every subdivision has community development blocks, which are further subdivided into census towns and rural areas, in addition to the municipality area.
