Uttar Dinajpur, sometimes referred to as North Dinajpur, is a district in the West Bengal state of India. It was formed on April 1, 1992, when the former West Dinajpur district was divided into Raiganj and Islampur.

History

In the Pundra monarchy, the district of Dinajpur was unbroken. The fourth century BCE saw the development of Jainism throughout Pundra, which was a part of the Mauryan empire. Their two other ancient towns were Gourpur and Kotibarsha, which is today known as Bangarh. Their capital was Pundrabardhan, which is now in Bangladesh. Subsequent many inscriptions demonstrate Pundra’s subordination to the Guptas. Then, starting in 750 CE, the district was ruled by the Pala. In 1143, the Senas ousted the Palas. After defeating the Senas in 1204, Bakhtiyar Khilji established Bangarh as his capital.

Geography

Uttar Dinajpur district is 3,142 sq km (1,213 sq mi) in size, with latitudes between 25°11′ N and 26°49′ N and longitudes between 87°49′ E and 90°00′ E. To the east are the districts of Panchagarh, Thakurgaon, and Dinajpur in Bangladesh; to the west are the districts of Kishanganj, Purnia, and Katihar in Bihar; to the north are the districts of Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri; and to the south are Malda district and Dakshin Dinajpur district. The major rivers, Kulik, Nagar, and Mahananda, flow toward a gently sloping southerly topography that is largely level throughout the region.

Economy

In 2006, Uttar Dinajpur was listed as one of the 250 most backward districts in the nation by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj. The district in question is one of the eleven in West Bengal that is presently getting funding from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Program (BRGF). However, Dalkhola is currently the primary economic and commercial center with excellent transportation links, which boosts the economies of Uttar Dinajpur District and Dalkhola.

Uttar Dinajpur has a 59.1% literacy rate and a sex ratio of 936 females for every 1000 males. The population residing in urban areas is 12.05%. 26.87% of people are members of Scheduled Castes, while 5.41% are members of Scheduled Tribes.

Language

68.06% of people spoke Bengali as their first language, followed by 13.22% Surjapuri, 9.48% Urdu, 3.77% Santali, 3.76% Hindi, and 1.03% Rajbongshi, according to the 2011 census. Although Bengali is the primary language, the Islampur subdivision is home to a sizable population of speakers of Urdu, Hindi, and Maithili. Due to official negligence, it is among India’s most educationally and economically underdeveloped districts. The district’s spoken Bengali dialects are referred to as Varendri and Shershabadia, respectively.
