History

Palamu district harbors Neolithic and Chalcolithic settlements at the Son and North Koel rivers’ confluence, seen in the Kabra-Kala mound. Historically, the Kharwars, erstwhile rulers of Rohtas Fort, possibly migrated to this district. Ruler Pratapaghavala extended influence from Rohtas into northern Palamu, constructing roads and wielding authority west of the Son. Local Kurukh tribes recount their past control over Rohtas Fort in northwestern Jharkhand but were displaced during a festival ambush, compelling their retreat southward. According to the 2011 census, Palamu district comprises 1,939,869 residents, ranking 243rd among Indian districts. The population density stands at 442 individuals per square kilometer (1,140/sq mi), reflecting a growth rate of 25.94% from 2001 to 2011. The sex ratio registers 929 females per 1000 males, while the literacy rate stands at 63.63%. Urban areas host 11.65% of the populace, with Scheduled Castes and Tribes constituting 27.65% and 9.34% respectively. Geography

Palamu district, situated between 23°50′ to 24°8′ north latitude and 83°55′ to 84°30′ east longitude, is flanked by the Son River and Bihar to the north, while Chatra and Hazaribagh districts border it to the east. To the south lies the Latehar district, and to the west, the Garhwa district completes its boundaries.
