History

The city of Pratapgarh derives its name from Raja Pratap Bahadur Singh, a revered Rajput ruler of the Somvanshi Dynasty, who constructed the iconic Pratapgarh Mahal. Around this castle, the region eventually became known as Pratapgarh. In 1928, the Simon Commission’s arrival in India sparked widespread protests against British rule. Talukdars spearheaded the movement, notably welcoming Congress leaders Jawaharlal Nehru and Mohanlal Saxena to a public meeting at Hadi Hall in Bela Pratapgarh on July 10. Mahatma Gandhi also graced Pratapgarh in 1929, addressing a crowd of 5000 and receiving a generous purse from then-Raja Awadhesh Singh of Kalakankar.

Pratapgarh district is traversed by the Sai and Ganges rivers, situated between 25°34′ and 26°11′ north latitude and 81°19′ to 82°27′ east longitude. Extending 110 kilometers from west to east, it shares borders with Sultanpur to the north, Allahabad to the south, Jaunpur to the east, Fatehpur to the west, and Raebareli to the northwest. The Ganges spans about 50 kilometers, separating it from Fatehpur and Allahabad in the southwest, while the Gomti delineates around 6 kilometers in the extreme northeast. Covering 3,730 square kilometers, as per the Central Statistical Organization, it’s a region defined by these natural delineations.

Economy

“In 2006, Pratapgarh was designated among India’s 250 most backward districts by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj out of 640. This Uttar Pradesh district presently benefits from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF). Predominantly agricultural, Pratapgarh has emerged as a leading Aonla (Amla) producer, supplying this fruit across India and globally for confectionery and medicinal purposes. Its exponential rise in Aonla cultivation has positioned it prominently in the agricultural landscape, showcasing its prowess beyond local boundaries and contributing significantly to the nation’s fruit production and healthcare industries.”
