About Rajgarh
Rajgarh district, situated in central India’s Madhya Pradesh, has its administrative seat in the city of Rajgarh, previously known as Jhanjhanipur. Recognized by the Indian Government as an aspirational district, Rajgarh covers 6,154 km² and had a population of 1,545,814 according to the 2011 census. It is located on the northern edge of the Malwa plateau, bordered by the Parbati River in the east and the Kali Sindh River in the west. The district comprises seven tehsils: Rajgarh, Khilchipur, Jirapur, Biaora, Narsinghgarh, Sarangpur, and Pachore, and is surrounded by Rajasthan, Guna, Bhopal, Sehore, and Shajapur districts. Forming part of the Bhopal Division, it contains 1,728 villages.
History:
Rajgarh District, named after its headquarters Rajgarh, was formed in May 1948 following the creation of Madhya Bharat. The area was previously divided among several states like Rajgarh, Narsinghgarh, and others. Rajgarh, initially called Jhanjhanipur, became the headquarters in 1645 when Mohan Singh acquired it from the Bhils. The district’s history includes connections with the Mughal Empire and the granting of privileges by Akbar. In 1908, the region was divided into several Parganas, each managed by a Tahsildar. Notably, in 1645, a palace was built in Rajgarh with five gates and three ancient temples, providing a safe haven for Rajmata and her son Rawat Mohan Singh. Rajgarh, once known as Jhanjherpur, became famous due to this palace.

Rajgarh District, covers an area of approximately 6,154 square kilometers. Geographically, it lies in a region characterized by a mix of plains and hilly terrains. The district is blessed with several rivers, with the Newaj and Parbati being the most prominent, providing essential water sources for agriculture and daily life. Regarding language preferences, the majority of the district’s population, about 74.58%, primarily speak Hindi. Additionally, 24.20% of the people in the district speak Malvi as their first language.
