Serchhip District, one of Mizoram state’s eleven districts in India, spans across an area of 1421.60 square kilometers. Serchhip town serves as its administrative center. Established on 15th September 1998, it was carved out of the larger Aizawl District, encompassing sections of East Lungdar Tehsil and Thingsulthliah Tehsil. Notably, the district boasts the highest literacy rate in India, according to the 2011 census. Additionally, it ranks as the second least populous district in Mizoram among the eight districts, following Saiha. Serchhip District, situated in the northeastern state of Mizoram, India, has a brief but significant history. It was carved out of the larger Aizawl District on September 15, 1998, as part of administrative reorganization. This strategic move aimed to facilitate better governance and administrative efficiency. Serchhip District includes portions of East Lungdar Tehsil and Thingsulthliah Tehsil. Over the years, it has gained recognition for its remarkable achievement of having the highest literacy rate in India, according to the 2011 census. The district’s history is intertwined with Mizoram’s journey towards education and development, making it a unique and noteworthy region.


According to the 2011 census, Serchhip district in Mizoram, India, had a population of 64,937, roughly equivalent to the nation of Marshall Islands. This places it at the 626th position out of a total of 640 districts in India. Approximately one-third of the population resides in and around the town of Serchhip. The district boasts a population density of 46 inhabitants per square kilometer (120/sq mi) and experienced a population growth rate of 20.56% during the 2001-2011 decade. The sex ratio is 977 females per 1000 males, with a commendable literacy rate of 97.91%. About 49.31% of the population resides in urban areas, and Scheduled Tribes make up a significant 96.85% of the population. The primary language spoken by 97.75% of the population is Mizo. The majority of the residents are engaged in agricultural activities.


Serchhip District is bordered to the north and northwest by Aizawl District, to the west and south by Lunglei District, to the southeast by Myanmar (Burma), and to the east by Champhai District. It predominantly features hilly terrain, interspersed with alluvial benches along its rivers, which are vital for agriculture. Situated between the Mat River and the Tuikum River, the latter serves as the primary source of drinking water for Serchhip town, while the Mat River irrigates Zawlpui, known as Serchhip’s “rice bowl.” Notably, Vantawng Falls, Mizoram’s highest waterfall, graces the district, located around 5 kilometers south of Thenzawl town on the Lau River. Serchhip District experiences an average elevation of 888 meters, with an annual daily temperature range of 15°C to 27°C, coupled with moderate rainfall.


The district is under the administration of a deputy commissioner based in Serchhip town. Serchhip District is divided into three sub-divisions, namely Serchhip Sadar, North Vanlaiphai, and Thenzawl, encompassing a total of forty-one villages. It comprises three legislative assembly constituencies: Tuikum, Hrangturzo, and Serchhip. Notably, Tuikum Constituency incorporates three villages from Aizawl District, namely Darlawng, Phulmawi, and Tlungvel. Additionally, Hrangturzo Constituency includes the town of Biate, situated in Champhai District, thereby reflecting the district’s administrative and electoral divisions effectively.
