The sex ratio is 977 females per 1000 males, with a commendable literacy rate of 97.91%. About 49.31% of the population resides in urban areas, and Scheduled Tribes make up a significant 96.85% of the population. The primary language spoken by 97.75% of the population is Mizo. The majority of the residents are engaged in agricultural activities.

Geography

Serchhip District is bordered to the north and northwest by Aizawl District, to the west and south by Lunglei District, to the southeast by Myanmar (Burma), and to the east by Champhai District. It predominantly features hilly terrain, interspersed with alluvial benches along its rivers, which are vital for agriculture. Situated between the Mat River and the Tuikum River, the latter serves as the primary source of drinking water for Serchhip town, while the Mat River irrigates Zawlpui, known as Serchhip’s “rice bowl.” Notably, Vantawng Falls, Mizoram’s highest waterfall, graces the district, located around 5 kilometers south of Thenzawl town on the Lau River. Serchhip District experiences an average elevation of 888 meters, with an annual daily temperature range of 15°C to 27°C, coupled with moderate rainfall.

Administration

The district is under the administration of a deputy commissioner based in Serchhip town. Serchhip District is divided into three sub-divisions, namely Serchhip Sadar, North Vanlaiphai, and Thenzawl, encompassing a total of forty-one villages. It comprises three legislative assembly constituencies: Tuikum, Hrangturzo, and Serchhip. Notably, Tuikum Constituency incorporates three villages from Aizawl District, namely Darlawng, Phulmawi, and Tlungvel.
