History

Shahjahanpur, founded by Dilir Khan and Bahadar Khan, sons of Dariya Khan from Kandahar, Afghanistan, thrived under Shah Jahan’s rule. Recognizing Dilir Khan’s contributions, Shah Jahan granted him 17 villages and fort construction rights in 1647, after quelling the Katheria Rajputs’ uprising. Afghans, led by Bahadar Khan, settled the area post his campaigns. In 1925, near Kakori railway station, Indian freedom fighters Ram Prasad Bismil, Ashfaqulla Khan, Chandrashekhar Azad, and Rajendra Lahiri executed a government fund robbery. Notably, both Bismil and Khan hailed from Shahjahanpur, marking the city’s historical significance in India’s freedom struggle.
