Solapur, situated in the southwestern part of Maharashtra, near the Karnataka border, enjoys a strategic location along major transportation routes. History

Solapur, historically known as Sonnalage, boasts a rich heritage shaped by dynasties like the Andhrabhratyas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Yadavas, and Bahamanis. The city’s name, ‘Solapur,’ derived from Marathi, is a fusion of ‘Sola’ (meaning “sixteen” in Hindi) and ‘Pura’ (signifying “village”). Solapur’s urban landscape was once an amalgamation of sixteen distinct villages, including Aadilpur, Ahmedpur, Chapaldev, Fatehpur, Jamdarwadi, Kalajapur, Khadarpur, Khandervkiwadi, Muhammadpur, Ranapur, Sandalpur, Shaikpur, Solapur, Sonallagi, Sonapur, and Vaidakwadi. Today, these villages are seamlessly integrated into the Solapur Municipal Corporation, forming the dynamic and culturally rich present-day city of Solapur.

Demography

As per the 2011 census of Solapur city, the population stood at 951,118, comprising 482,194 males and 468,924 females. Regarding language, 73.13% spoke Marathi, 9.28% Kannada, 6.47% Hindi, 4.49% Telugu, and 3.94% Urdu as their primary language. By 2012, including its suburbs, Solapur’s population expanded to 1,250,000. In terms of literacy, the city had 710,180 literates, with 390,335 males and 319,845 females. The overall literacy rate was 83.88%, with male and female literacy rates at 91.31% and 76.30%, respectively. Hinduism was the predominant religion, with 75.73% adherents, followed by Islam at 20.64%. Additionally, Buddhism accounted for 1.62%, Jainism 1.00%, Christianity 0.73%, and 0.28% were categorized as others, non-religious, or unspecified.

Solapur, positioned at coordinates 17.68°N latitude and 75.92°E longitude, enjoys an average elevation of 458 meters (1502 feet). This city is geographically bordered by Ahmednagar district to the north, while Osmanabad district envelops its northern and northeastern boundaries. To the southeast, it shares its limits with Kalaburagi district, and to the south, it abuts Bijapur Districts in the state of Karnataka. Sangli district forms the southern and southwestern borders, while Satara district lies to the west, and Pune district to the northwest. Solapur is conveniently located 410 km (250 mi) away from Mumbai, 245 km (152 mi) from Pune, and 305 km (190 mi) from Hyderabad, all accessible by road and rail, on the Deccan plateau.
