With its headquarters located in Alipore, South 24 Parganas, also known as South Twenty Four Parganas and Dakshin 24 Parganas, is a district in the Indian state of West Bengal. In terms of size and population, it is West Bengal’s largest district. In India, it is the sixth most populated district. The district is divided between the isolated riverine settlements of the Sundarbans and Kolkata’s urban periphery.

History

Dhumghat was the original capital of Raja Bikramaditya and Maharaja Pratapaditya. Afterwards, it was moved to Ishwaripur, which was once known as Jeshoreshwaripur. South Bengal’s declaration of independence from the Mughal Empire was made by Maharaja Pratapaditya. As a Kayastha, Pratapaditya’s father Shrihari (Shridhar) was a powerful officer working under Daud Khan Karrani. After Daud fell, he took the government treasure and ran away. Then, in the swampy area to the far south of the Khulna province, he established a kingdom for himself in 1574 and assumed the title of Maharaja. In 1574, Pratapaditya came to inherit the throne.
