Dakshin Dinajpur, sometimes referred to as South Dinajpur, is a district in the West Bengal state of India. It was established on April 1, 1992, when the West Dinajpur District was divided. Balurghat is home to the district’s headquarters, or “sadar.” It is divided into two subdivisions: Gangarampur and Balurghat. It is West Bengal’s third least populated district, per the 2011 census.

History

During India’s partition, the district that was once known as Dinajpur was divided into two parts: West Dinajpur and East Dinajpur. Dinajpur, the district formerly known as East Dinajpur, was incorporated into East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). When the States Reorganisation Act’s recommendations were put into practice in 1956, the West Dinajpur district was expanded to include certain parts of Bihar. On April 1, 1992, the district was divided into Uttar Dinajpur and Dakshin Dinajpur.

Economy

With a sizable portion of its territory under agriculture, Dakshin Dinajpur is mostly an agricultural district. Rivers that flow from north to south across the territory, including the Atreyee, Purnabhaba, Tangon, and Jamuna River, drain the area and support a sizable unorganized fishing community. Although there are several medium-sized and tiny hand loom businesses, particularly in the Gangarampur block, Dakshin Dinajpur is classified as a “non-large scale industry”. Most cities have access to the internet, and broadband connections are also available. In the district, there is just one State Highway and 77 km of National Highway No. 512.

Administration

There are two subdivisions in the district: Buniadpur’s Gangarampur and Balurghat. Four community development blocks Hilia, Balurghat, Kumarganj, and Tapan—as well as the Balurghat municipality make up the Balurghat subdivision. The four community development blocks of Gangarampur, Bansihari, Harirampur, and Kushmandi make up the Gangarampur subdivision, together with the municipalities of Gangarampur and Buniadpur. The district headquarters are in Balurghat. In this district, there are 2317 villages, 64 gram panchayats, three municipalities, nine police stations, and eight development blocks.

Demography

There are 1,676,276 people living in the Dakshin Dinajpur district as per the 2011 census. comparable to the US state of Idaho or the country of Guinea-Bissau. As a result, it is ranked 295th in India. The district has a population density of 1,950/sq mi, or 753 people per square kilometer. Between 2001 and 2011, the population growth rate was 11.16%. In Dakshin Dinajpur, there are 954 females for every 1000 males and a 73.86% literacy rate. The population residing in urban areas is 14.10%.

Language

The district’s primary language is Bengali. This region’s predominant Bengali dialect is referred to as Varendri or Dinajpuri. 84.41% of people spoke Bengali as their first language, followed by Santali (9.68%), Kurukh (1.31%), Sadri (1.25%), and Hindi (1.05%) in the 2011 census.
