About South Sikkim
The South District of Sikkim spans an area of about 75,000 hectares and is located between 400 and 2000 meters above sea level. It offers a distinctive rural getaway with unending waves of agricultural fields and terraced slopes broken up by spring-patched woodland. It is the second-most populous and smallest district in Sikkim in terms of area. According to the 2011 census, the total population is 1,46,850, of which 76,670 are men and 70,180 are women. The capital of South Sikkim, Namchi, also known as Namtse, or “Sky High,” lies tucked away amid the hills at a height of 5,500 feet and offers sweeping views of the valley and snow-capped peaks.
Administration
The District Collector of the Namchi District, which has its headquarters in Namchi, is in charge of the district’s general management and oversees the operations of all other state government agencies and PSUs in the district. The Sub-Divisional Magistrates and Deputy Directors are among the officers who oversee the several divisions within the District Collector’s office. The Additional District Collector, who oversees certain Collector divisions, provides assistance to the district collector.
Geography
The Namchi district enjoys a moderate climate during the majority of the year due to its elevation of 400 to 2000 meters. Melli, Jorethang, Namchi, and Ravangla are some of the major cities.
Economy
Because there is flat ground there, South Sikkim is the most industrialized district in the state. The roads are in good shape since the bedrock is stable, unlike other sections of the state that experience landslides. Grown in the vicinity of Namchi, Sikkim tea is another specialty of the district.
Demography
The population of the Namchi district, as of the 2011 census, is 146,850, or almost the same as that of Saint Lucia. As a result, it is ranked 600th in India. There are 196 people living in the district per square kilometer (510/sq mi). Over the period of 2001–2011, its population increased at a pace of 11.57%. It boasts an 82.06% literacy rate, with 914 females for every 1000 males.
Language
72.66% of people in the district spoke Nepali as their first language at the time of the 2011 Indian Census, followed by Sikkimese (3.88%), Lepcha (3.61%), Limbu (3.57%), Hindi (3.25%), Sherpa (3.19%), Tamang (2.46%), Rai (1.65%), Bhojpuri (1.26%), Tibetan (0.88%), and Bengali (0.83%).
