Pre-734 CE, Tehri Garhwal comprised 48 garhs governed by autonomous rulers. Kanakpal, a Malwa prince, unified these garhs into a single province. During his pilgrimage to Badrinath, he encountered Bhanu Pratap, the formidable ruler, marrying his sole daughter to Kanakpal. In a significant gesture, Bhanu Pratap bestowed his realm upon the prince. Kanakpal Singh and his lineage progressively subjugated all garhs, reigning over the entirety of Garhwal Kingdom for 915 years, until 1803. This union under Kanakpal marked the inception of an enduring dynasty that consolidated disparate territories into the cohesive tapestry of Garhwal’s rich history.
