Thiruvarur, also spelled as Tiruvarur, is a historic town and municipality located in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Serving as the administrative hub for Thiruvarur district and Thiruvarur taluk, this town is renowned for its cultural significance. One of its iconic landmarks is the massive chariot of the Thyagaraja temple, weighing a staggering 360 tonnes and towering at 96 feet, making it the largest temple chariot across India. Thiruvarur is also famous as the birthplace of legendary Carnatic music composers, Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar, and Syama Sastri, collectively known as the Trinity of Carnatic music from the 18th century CE. Notably, the Thiruvarur Thiyagarajaa Swaamy temple predates even the famous Tanjore big temple, adding to its historical allure.

History

According to folklore, Thiruvarur is steeped in legend as the capital city of the legendary Chola king, Manu Needhi Cholan. This remarkable ruler is believed to have sacrificed his own son in the name of justice, symbolizing his commitment to fairness and righteousness. Thiruvarur holds a significant place in history as one of the five traditional capitals of the mighty Chola empire, with the Thyagarajaswamy temple at its core. The town’s rich historical tapestry is intricately woven into the fabric of Saivite culture, as evidenced by its mention in the saiva canonical work, Tevaram, composed by revered Saivite saints Thirugnana Sambanthar, Tirunavukkarasar, and Sundarar during the seventh to eighth century CE, earning it the prestigious classification of Padal petra stalam.

Demography

In 1901, Thiruvarur had a population of 15,436 residents. Fast forward to the 2011 census, the town’s population had substantially increased to 58,301. The gender ratio in Thiruvarur was notably skewed, with 1,053 females for every 1,000 males, surpassing the national average of 929. Among the population, 5,779 were children below the age of six, comprising 2,888 males and 2,891 females. Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes made up 32% and 0.66% of the population, respectively. The town exhibited an impressive literacy rate of 82%, outperforming the national average of 72.99%, reflecting its commitment to education and progress.

Geography

Thiruvarur is geographically situated at 9.28°N latitude and 79.3°E longitude, bordered by the Sukumar river to the north, the Valaiyar river to the south, and the Odambokki river flowing through its center. With an average elevation of merely 3 meters (9.8 feet) above sea level, it covers an area of 10.47 square kilometers (4.04 square miles). Thiruvarur is strategically located, approximately 300 km from Chennai, 24 km from Nagapattinam, 40 km from Karaikal, 40 km from Mayiladuthurai, and 56 km from Thanjavur. The town experiences a tropical climate characterized by high humidity throughout the year, peaking at 70% from August to May, and an annual rainfall of 1,260 millimeters (50 inches). Its terrain primarily comprises alluvial soil, including sand, silt, and clay.

Economy

Thiruvarur, nestled within the fertile Kaveri River basin, thrives primarily on agriculture as its mainstay. Over 70% of the local populace is engaged in this occupation, with 14% working as cultivators and the remainder as agricultural laborers. The cultivation of paddy is a key focus, occurring in three distinct seasons: Kuruvai (June–August), Samba (August–January), and Thaladi (January–March). While daily wages for agricultural laborers exceed the rates mandated by the Tamil Nadu government, a reduction in available workdays has led to lower income levels. In 1998, male laborers were employed for 150 days annually, whereas female laborers worked for 120 days.
