About Tonk District

Tonk, nestled in Rajasthan, lies 95 km south of Jaipur along the Banas River. As the district’s heart, it hosts the administrative center. Once the capital of a British princely state from 1817 to 1947, Tonk boasts historical significance. This town witnessed the filming of Kamal Amrohi’s ‘Razia Sultan’ in 1981–82. Notable sites like Shahi Jama Masjid, Bisalpur Dam, and the Arabic Persian Research Institute grace Tonk’s landscape. Its cultural richness shines through landmarks such as Annapurna Dungri Ganesh Temple and the historic Rasiya Ki Tekri. Known as the ‘Nawabo ka Shahar’ of Rajasthan, Tonk captivates visitors with its heritage, including Kidwai Park and Chaturbhuj Talab Lake.

History

In the 12th century, a Brahmin named Tunkau laid the foundation of a settlement, eventually dubbed Tunk, later evolving into Tonk. Alternatively, historical narratives suggest another account attributing the town’s creation to a Brahman named Bhola in 1643. These diverse narratives intertwine to shape the town’s origin, depicting the convergence of cultural histories. Whether founded by Tunkau or Bhola, Tonk’s inception bears testament to the amalgamation of stories, encapsulating the town’s rich past. The tales of its establishment, echoing through time, add layers of intrigue to the heritage of Tonk, highlighting the diversity within its historical chronicles.

Encompassing 7194 km2 (as per 2002-03), it stands among Rajasthan’s few district headquarters without direct rail connectivity. The closest rail hub, Newai, lies 30 km from the district center. This acknowledgment reflects the district’s inclusion in initiatives aimed at addressing socio-economic disparities, fostering development, and empowering communities.
