Udupi Pincodes

Udupi district, also known as Udipi or Odipu in the Tulu language, is an administrative region in the Karnataka state of India, with its main city being Udupi. Located in the Canara coastal region, it comprises seven taluks, 233 villages, and 21 towns. On August 25, 1997, the three northern tehsils of Udupi, Kundapur, and Karkala were separated from the Dakshina Kannada district to form the Udupi district. Later, in February 2018, the district underwent further division, with the creation of three additional taluks: Byndoor from Kundapur taluk, and the splitting of the Udupi taluk into Kapu, Brahmavar, and Hebri.

Geography:

Udupi district is enclosed by Uttara Kannada district to the north, Dakshina Kannada district to the south, Shimoga district to the northeast, and Chikmagalur district to the east. To the west, it is bordered by the Arabian Sea.

Economy:

In Udupi district, a thermal power plant has been established in Nandikoor, boasting an initial capacity of 1200 MW, and there are plans for further expansion to 1600 MW. Suzlon operates a blade manufacturing facility in Padubidre for wind mills, although the project has faced controversies, including a prolonged lock-out in November 2017 and subsequent suspensions in July 2018.

Additionally, a strategic petroleum reserve has been established underground in the village of Padur in Udupi district. The Shivalli Industrial Estate in Manipal houses several small-scale industries, including the production of clay roof tiles (Mangalore tiles), cashew nut processing, coconut oil mills, and fish meal processing. The district is also home to numerous small entrepreneurs who produce pickles, papads (happala), spice powders, and other food products.

Before the nationalization of commercial banks and insurance companies in the early 1960s, Udupi district had several private banks and insurance companies. Notably, Syndicate Bank, Corporation Bank, and Canara Bank originated in this district during British colonial rule before India gained independence in 1947.

Demographics:

According to the 2011 census, Udupi district had a total population of 1,177,361 people, making it the 403rd most populous district in India out of 640. The district is quite densely populated, with an average of 304 people living in each square kilometer.

Out of the total population, there are 253,078 households, with 562,131 being males and 615,230 females. The number of children aged 0-6 years is 103,160, accounting for 8.76% of the total population. The sex ratio in Udupi district is approximately 1094 females for every 1000 males, which is higher than the Karnataka state average of 973.

In terms of literacy, Udupi district has an overall literacy rate of 78.69%. Among males, the literacy rate is 82.85%, while among females, it’s slightly lower at 74.89%. The total land area of Udupi is 3,582 square kilometers, and it has a population density of 329 people per square kilometer.

Additionally, Udupi has a sex ratio of 1093 females for every 1000 males and a higher literacy rate of 86.29%. About 28.37% of the population resides in urban areas. In terms of languages spoken, 42.70% of the population speaks Kannada, 31.44% Tulu, 12.16% Konkani, 4.61% Urdu, 2.83% Marathi, 2.13% Malayalam, and 2.01% Beary as their first language.
