About Uttarkashi

Uttarkashi, dubbed “Kashi of the North,” resides in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand, India, serving as its headquarters. Also known as Somya Kashi and Shivnagri, it’s a revered Hindu hub for spirituality and adventure tourism. Nestled along the Bhagirathi river at 1158m above sea level, it mirrors the sanctity of Rishikesh. Hosting numerous temples, ashrams, and the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi epitomizes religious fervor, education, and scenic beauty. Much like Varanasi, it rests on the Ganges, by Varunavat hill, converging Varuna and Asi rivers, boasting a Manikarnika Ghat and a Shiva temple akin to Varanasi’s Kashi Vishwanath Temple, magnifying its spiritual resonance.

History

The ancient Uttarkashi district echoes tales from the Rig Vedic era. Aitareya Brahmana reveres it as the sacred ground of celestial rituals, while Kaushitaki Brahmana hails its preservation of Vedic Sanskrit. Mahabharata’s Upayana Parva mentions diverse hill tribes—Taganas, Kiratas, and Kunindas—who graced Yudhishthira’s Rajasuya yagna. Ptolemy notes Taganas east of the Ganges, Kulindrine near grand river sources, and Kiratas along the northern Himalayan slopes. Legend intertwines Uttarkashi; Parshurama’s tragic act at Nakuri and the Pandavas’ passage through Patangini en route Swargarohini, their final abode after relinquishing their kingdom to Parikshit. This region breathes history, weaving ancient sagas within its majestic landscapes.

Demography

As per the 2001 India census, Uttarkashi city recorded a population of 40,220, with males comprising 57% and females 43%. The city boasts an impressive literacy rate of 78%, surpassing the national average of 59.5%, with male literacy at 83% and female literacy at 71%. Around 11% of the population is under 6 years old. Predominantly inhabited by Garhwali residents, Uttarkashi also sees sizable communities of Punjabi, Kumaoni, and other Northern Indian groups. Notably, the region hosts a significant populace of the Bhotiya Jadh people, enriching its diverse cultural fabric.

Geography

Situated at 30.73°N 78.45°E, Uttarkashi enjoys an average elevation of 1,165 meters (3,822 ft) amid predominantly hilly terrain. The district is blessed with numerous rivers, prominent among them being the revered Yamuna and the Ganges (known as Bhagirathi to Hindus). Yamunotri marks the source of the Yamuna, while the Bhagirathi emanates from Gangotri (Gomukh). Adding to the river network are tributaries like Asi Ganga and Jad Ganga that contribute to the majestic Ganges. Uttarkashi’s landscape, adorned with these sacred waterways, showcases nature’s sublime beauty and spiritual significance.

Administration

The District administration is spearheaded by the I.A.S Collector overseeing law, order, and development. The Additional Collector manages revenue affairs, also serving as an Additional District Magistrate. Divided into 6 Sub Divisions, each led by an SDM, these offices mirror the Collectorate’s structure, aiding in administrative processes. The District comprises six tahsils: Bhatwadi, Dunda, Chinyalisaud, Badkot, Purola, and Mori. Responsibilities encompass civil supplies, land affairs, and more. This cohesive system ensures smooth governance, with the Collector and his team orchestrating planning, elections, and maintaining peace in the sprawling jurisdiction of Uttarkashi.
