About Wardha District

Wardha, a city and municipal council nestled in Maharashtra’s Wardha district, serves as the administrative hub of the region. This city owes its name to the Wardha River, gracefully winding along its northern, western, and southern borders. Established in 1866, Wardha has evolved into a prominent cotton trading center, contributing significantly to the local economy. Notably, it played a pivotal role in the Gandhian era, bearing witness to Mahatma Gandhi’s transformative activities and philosophies. With a rich history and a vibrant present, Wardha continues to stand as a symbol of both progress and heritage in the heart of Maharashtra.

History

Wardha boasts a rich historical tapestry, having been part of various dynasties and empires throughout its history. Initially under the dominion of the Mauryas, Shungas, Satavahanas, and Vakatakas, it even served as the capital of the Vakataka dynasty, contemporaries of the Imperial Guptas. Notably, Prabhavatigupta, daughter of Chandragupta II, married Vakataka ruler Rudrasena. This era, spanning the 2nd to 5th centuries CE, extended from the Arabian Sea to the Bay of Bengal and from the Narmada River to the Krishna-Godavari delta. Subsequently, Wardha witnessed the rule of Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Yadavas, Delhi Sultanate, Bahamani Sultanate, Berar’s Muslim rulers, Gonds, and Marathas.

Demography

Wardha city, categorized under a municipal council (category-A), is home to approximately 105,543 residents within its municipal boundaries, as per the 2011 census. The city’s urbanization has played a pivotal role in the development of neighboring villages such as Sindi, Sawangi, Borgaon, Pipri, Mhasala, Nalwadi, and Chitoda. Wardha district, during the same census, boasted a total population of 1,296,157, with males comprising 52% and females 48%. The city also exhibits an impressive literacy rate of 80%, surpassing the national average of 59.5%, with male literacy at 83% and female literacy at 76%. Geography

Wardha is situated at geographical coordinates 20.75°N latitude and 78.60°E longitude, pinpointing its exact location on the Earth’s surface. This charming city boasts an average elevation of approximately 234 meters (768 feet) above sea level, adding to its unique topographical features. The elevation not only contributes to Wardha’s picturesque landscape but also influences its climate and weather patterns. This geographical information is invaluable for understanding the city’s geographical context and is useful for various purposes, from urban planning to tourism, making it a crucial aspect of Wardha’s identity and character.

Economy

Cotton farming and soybean cultivation are prevalent during the Kharif season in Wardha. The government has facilitated canal irrigation for the Rabi season, when Bengal gram (chickpea) gains popularity. While several institutions advocate for natural and organic farming, the lack of support systems, both in terms of techniques and marketability, hinders its adoption. Wardha is emerging as the Vidarbha region’s second industrial hub, owing to its strategic location and robust rail and road connectivity. Over the past few decades, numerous companies and industrial plants, including steel and power facilities, have been established. The C. Dass Group is currently constructing the Wardha IT Park, the second in Vidarbha, situated in the MIDC area along the Wardha-Sevagram road.
