About Washim District
Washim, often pronounced as “Vatsagulma,” is a prominent city and the administrative seat of the Washim district situated in the western Indian state of Maharashtra. As the district headquarters, Washim plays a pivotal role in the region’s governance and development. This city, steeped in history and culture, is not only an essential administrative center but also a thriving urban hub that offers a diverse range of services and amenities to its residents and visitors. History
In 1939, a significant historical artifact known as the “Washim Plate” was unearthed, shedding light on an intriguing chapter in the city’s history. The inscription on this plate revealed that Washim, formerly known as Vatsagulma, was established by Sarvasenana, a member of the Vakatak dynasty. Sarvasenana made Vatsagulma the capital of his kingdom around 330-355 CE. Over time, Vatsagulma blossomed into a hub of culture and learning. References to this ancient city can be found in texts such as the Mahabharata, Kamasutra, and Kavyamimansa by Rajashekhara, who lived from 875 to 925 CE. The Prakrit name “Vachchhoma” eventually evolved into “Washim,” as per the Sanskrit treatise Vatsagulmyamahatmya, solidifying its rich historical significance.
