Geography

Situated between around 25 degrees 10′ and 25 degrees 51′ N latitude and 90 degrees 44′ and 91 degrees 49′ E longitude, the District is located in the middle region of the State of Meghalaya. It is bordered to the north-west by the Assamese district of Kamrup, to the northeast by the district of Ri Bhoi, to the east by the district of East Khasi Hills, to the south by Bangladesh and the district of South West Khasi Hills, formerly known as the Mawkyrwat Civil Sub division, and to the west by the districts of East Garo and South Garo Hills. The district occupies an area of approximately 3911.22 square kilometers, or 17% of the state’s total area.

The district’s center upland zone has a temperate climate, while the northern, western, and southern foothills have a moderately tropical environment. Places at medium height in the district enjoy sub-tropical climates. The South-West monsoon affects the district, and while summer rainfall is certain, the amount varies substantially from region to region. The annual rainfall varies between 1200 and 3000 mm.
