History

Formerly known as “Yeoti” or “Yeotmal,” Yavatmal, Maharashtra, holds a rich historical legacy. It served as the prominent town of the Berar Sultanate and was hailed as “the safest place in the world” in ancient records. Yavatmal’s history unfolds with its inclusion in Aladdin Hassan Bahman Shah’s Bahmani Sultanate in 1347. In 1572, it became part of the Ahmadnagar Sultanate under Murtaza Shah. Chand Bibi later ceded it to the Mughal Empire in 1596. Yavatmal witnessed transitions under various rulers, eventually becoming part of the Maratha Empire under Raghoji I Bhonsle. It joined British Berar Province in 1853 and later Maharashtra in 1960.

Demography

According to the 2011 Indian Census, Yavatmal had a total population of 116,551, with 58,549 males and 58,002 females. The population aged 0 to 6 years was 11,360, while the total number of literates was 96,726, accounting for 82.9% of the population, with male literacy at 85.1% and female literacy at 80.9%. The effective literacy rate among the population aged 7 and above was 91.9%, with a male literacy rate of 94.8% and a female literacy rate of 89.1%. Additionally, there were 19,816 Scheduled Castes and 6,543 Scheduled Tribes individuals, and Yavatmal had 26,173 households in 2011.

Geography

Yavatmal District, located in the southwestern region of the Wardha Penganga-Wainganga basin, is positioned between 19.26 and 20.42 north latitudes and 77.18 to 79.9 east longitudes. It shares boundaries with Amravati and Wardha districts to the east, Chandrapur district, Telangana, and Nanded district to the north, and Parbhani and Akola districts to the west. Encompassing an area of 13,582 square kilometers (4.41 percent of the state), the district measures 190 kilometers in length and 160 kilometers in width from north to south. Yavatmal district occupies the southeastern part of Berar, nestled within hilly terrain and mountain ranges running east to west, with a central plateau ranging from 300 to 600 meters above sea level.

Economy 

During the British colonial era, Yavatmal was designated as a hill station. It currently serves as a prominent trading hub in the district, known for cotton ginning, pressing, and textile industries, including the Raymond UCO mill for denim production. Yavatmal hosts a growing textile Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and HLL Unilever’s plant. Additionally, it supports various agricultural supply facilities for the local farming community. Banking services are available in multiple nearby areas. Key industrial centers include MIDC Lohara, Darwha, Pusad, and others, with major markets in Yavatmal City, Arni, and neighboring towns.
