The administrative center of the 2004-created Krishnagiri District is located in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu at Krishnagiri. Situated at the base of the Krishnadevaraya Hills, the town is completely encircled by rocky hills. 90 km separate it from Bengaluru, 45 km from Dharmapuri, and 250 km from Chennai. Because mangoes are the primary crop grown in Krishnagiri, the area is referred to as the “Mango Capital of India” because of its rich freshwater resources and exceptionally fertile soil. There has been a lot of commercial and residential development in Krishnagiri. In 1967, the Krishnagiri Dam was constructed.

History

The Krishnagiri district holds significance from prehistoric times. The existence of human habitats during the Paleolithic, Neolithic, and Mesolithic periods is confirmed by archeological sources. This district’s historical significance is reinforced by the numerous Indus Valley civilization and Iron Age rock paintings and carvings that can be found there. The Krishnagiri region was formerly a part of Chera and Kongu Nadu. Chera emperors ruled it in the past. Later, the area was ruled by the Wodeyars of Mysore and the Nayaks of Madurai, as well as the Cholas, Pallavas, Gangas, Nulambas, Hoysalas, Vijaya Nagar, and Bijapur emperors.

Climate

Krishnagiri has a tropical savanna climate that is borderline hot and semi-arid. This area experiences 26.5 °C, or 79.7 °F, average temperature and 31.3 inches, or 794 millimeters, of annual rainfall. In Krishnagiri, there are three different seasons to observe. This area receives significant amounts of rainfall during the monsoon season, often at brief intervals. The monsoon season in Krishnagiri is long but not particularly strong. Winters are undoubtedly the greatest season to visit, with morning temperatures as low as 13 °C (55.4 °F) and overall very warm but dry conditions. The summer season lasts from March through June.

Demography

Krishnagiri had a population of 199,657 in 2011 and a sex ratio of 1,015 females for every 1,000 males, which was significantly higher than the 929 national average. There were 7,748 children under the age of six in all, 3,689 girls and 4,059 boys. Scheduled Tribes made up.18% and 10.64% of the population, respectively, of Scheduled Castes. The town’s average literacy was 76.79%, while the national average was 72.99%. In all, there were 16386 households in the town. There were 22,230 workers, 1,403 marginal workers, 10 marginal cultivators, 42 marginal agricultural laborers, 207 marginal workers in household industries, and 1,144 other marginal workers out of a total of 24,559 workers. There were also 99 main agricultural laborers, 640 in house hold industries, and 22,230 other workers.

Economy

Mango is the national fruit of India. Mango is the principal crop grown in the 300.17 km2 of cultivated land in the Krishnagiri district. The district is the top mango producer in Tamil Nadu, producing 300,000 tons annually. This is Krishnagiri District. Pulp is made from about 20% of the mango varieties grown in this district, including “Thothapuri” and “Alphonso.” Every year, tons of mangoes are processed into juice in this district in addition to processing mango pulp. The Krishnagiri district has been approved as the location of a large-scale mango export zone.
