About Nicobar Islands

The Nicobar Islands form an archipelagic chain of islands in the eastern Indian Ocean, situated in Southeast Asia. They are positioned approximately 150 kilometers northwest of Aceh on Sumatra and are separated from Thailand to the east by the Andaman Sea. These islands are located about 1,300 kilometers southeast of the Indian subcontinent, across the Bay of Bengal, and are administratively part of India, falling under the Nicobar district within the union territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Notably, UNESCO has designated the Great Nicobar Island as a member of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves. The land area of the Nicobar Islands encompasses 1,841 square kilometers, and according to the 2011 Census, they had a population of 36,844. The Nicobar Islands can be categorized into three distinct groups:

Northern Group:

1. Car Nicobar

Central Group:

1.Chowra
2.Teressa
3.Nancowrie

Southern Group:

1. Little Nicobar
2. Kondul Island
3.Pillomilo Island

Indira Point, which marks the southernmost extremity of Great Nicobar Island and of India itself, is situated approximately 150 kilometers north of Sumatra, Indonesia. The formation of the Nicobar Islands is part of a broader island arc resulting from the collision of the Indo-Australian Plate with Eurasia. This geological event led to the elevation of the Himalayas, most Indonesian islands, and the creation of a lengthy arc comprising highlands and islands. This arc encompasses the Arakan Yoma range in Burma, the Andaman and Nicobar islands, and the islands along the west coast of Sumatra, including the Banyak Islands and Mentawai Islands.

The climate in the Nicobar Islands is warm and tropical, with temperatures typically ranging between 22 and 30°C. The region experiences heavy rainfall due to annual monsoons, with precipitation levels averaging around 3,000 to 3,800 milli meters each year.

Nicobar Island is renowned for its pristine white-sand beaches, palm-fringed coastlines, and its status as a haven for underwater biodiversity, teeming with vibrant coral reefs and marine life. These features collectively make it a captivating and well-rounded tourist destination.
