About North and Middle Andaman
The North and Middle Andaman district, one of the three districts in the Indian Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, is nestled in the Bay of Bengal with Mayabunder as its district headquarters. Spanning 3,251.85 square kilometers, this district was established on August 18, 2006, by splitting from the former Andaman district, which encompassed all three tehsils of the Mayabunder sub-division.
With a total area of 3,227 square kilometers, it boasted a population of 105,597 per the 2011 census, roughly akin to the nation of Tonga. This places it at the 614th position in India, exhibiting a population density of 32 inhabitants per square kilometer. Over the 2001-2011 decade, the district’s population growth rate recorded a marginal decline of -0.07%. The sex ratio stands at 925 females for every 1,000 males, and the literacy rate is commendable at 84.25%.
The district comprises three tehsils: Diglipur, Mayabunder, and Rangat.
Diglipur, the largest town on North Andaman Island, boasts the Kalpong River, the sole river in the Andaman archipelago, and Saddle Peak, the highest point in the region. It covers an area of 884 square kilometers and had a population of 42,877 as of 2001.
Mayabunder, situated in the northern part of Middle Andaman Island, serves as both a town and a tehsil. In 2001, the county housed 23,912 inhabitants, with 3,182 residing in the town. Mayabunder is the administrative center of the North and Middle Andaman district, part of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands territory.
Rangat, positioned on the Middle Andaman Island, is one of the district’s three counties. According to the 2001 Census of India, it had a population of 38,824 individuals, primarily comprising Bengalis and Tamils. Rangat is situated 210 kilometers from Port Blair and 70 kilometers south of Mayabunder, enjoying well-established road and sea connections.
