About West Godavari
West Godavari district is a coastal district in Andhra Pradesh, its main office is in Bhimavaram. This district is bordered by the Krishna district and the Bay of Bengal to the south, the East Godavari district to the east, and the Eluru district, Kolleru Lake, and Upputeru Drain to the northwest.
History:
The Eastern Chalukyas were in charge of coastal Andhra Pradesh from 700 to 1200 CE, and their capital was in Vengi. Then, Eluru became part of the Kalinga Empire until 1471 CE when it was taken over by the Gajapati Empire. In 1515 CE, Sri Krishna Deva Raya conquered it. Later, after the Vijayanagara Kingdom fell, it was ruled by the Sultans of Golkonda from the Qutb Shahi Dynasty. On 15 April 1925, the West Godavari District was created with Bhimavaram as its main office, and all district and regional offices were centralized in Eluru.
In 1823, the British created the Rajahmundry District. Later, in 1859, they reorganized it and split it into two districts, called the Godavari and Krishna districts. Rajahmundry was the main office for the Godavari district during the British rule. Then, in 1925, they divided the Godavari district into two, and Kakinada became the main office for East Godavari while Eluru became the main office for West Godavari.
Now, after a new division on April 4, 2022, for a separate Eluru district, Bhimavaram has become the new main office for the West Godavari district.
