In addition to being the mandal headquarters of Proddatur mandal, the city is a municipality. In the former Kadapa District, it is the second-largest town. The municipality was founded prior to independence, making it the oldest. The location of Lord Ram’s residence in the Ramayana is where Proddatur acquired its name.
