History

The term “Taamapuram” was written on the walls surrounding the sanctuary sanctorum of the Marundeeswarar temple in Tirukachur hamlet, close to Chengalpattu, in the thirteenth century, which is when Tambaram was first mentioned. Churathur Nadu was the name of the region during the Later Chola era, which lasted from the ninth to the twelfth century CE. Thiruchuram, the modern-day Trisulam, inspired the name Churathur Nadu. From Tambaram in the south to Adambakkam and Alandur in the north, the Churathur Nadu stretched. Thiruneermalai, Pallavaram, and Pammal were included in the region.

Culture

Other names for Dhenupureeswarar Temple are Thiripureeswarar Temple and Dhenupurisvara Temple. These are the slang names for Shiva, the Hindu deity. Constructed during the time of Parantaka Chola II (r. 962–980 CE), the temple is situated in the Madambakkam district. The principal deity Dhenupureeswara is housed in the garbhagriha, the Sanskrit term for the sanctum sanctorum. The primary garbhagriha of Shiva temples constructed during the Chola Period is apsidal in design. The term gajaprishta vimana refers to this kind of garbhagriha; in Samskrit, “gajaprishta” literally means “back of an elephant”.
